Fun in Phoenix

Somehow the camera didn't make it out to take many pictures but over Easter weekend, Jason and I traveled to Phoenix to visit his cousins. We also got to see one of my best friends since high school, Paul.

We had many adventures over the weekend that lie outside the realm of this blog.  However, we also enjoyed lots of tasty Mexican food, personalized pizzas for Easter dinner, and hot wings. It was not the healthiest weekend.

In addition to good eats, we were able to enjoy some of our favorite beers that we don't get in Kirksville.  We met up with Paul and some friends at Four Peaks Brewing Company in Tempe, just blocks from the Arizona State University campus. The beers are decent, the food was very good, and the indoor but open air seating was a refreshing break after a long, cold dinner.

Jason and I shared a sampler and my favorite beers were the Hop Knot IPA (an American IPA) and the Raj IPA (an English-style IPA). Though I'm not normally a fan of Kolsch beers, I could definitely see their Sunbru Kolsch being refreshing in 100+ degree heat.

The Arizona Chicken Rolls had been recommended so we made sure to munch on an order. Then I had the Chicken Enchiladas (A delicious brewery version!) and Jason had a Mexican Chicken wrap that was a lunch special.

We also picked up some beers to taste over the long weekend. Since Kirksville is so small we try to stick to the rule of not eating at a restaurant that can be found at home. The same generally goes for beer as well. However, we were so excited about Stone Brewing Company's arrival in Kirksville that we had to buy more on the trip as well. (Now, Kirksville is sold out so I hope Stone gets the message that we are thankful they have FINALLY arrived!). Other craft beers we savored: Modus Hoperandi from SKA Brewing in Durango, Colorado, Dogfish Head 60 minute IPA, Stone Ruination IPA (one of my top 5 all-time favorites), Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale; and a few others.

I would strongly recommend all of these beers but the Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shutdown Ale had just been released. On the Lagunitas website, they describe the beer as an Imperial Mild weighing in at 9.75% ABV.  It was a good solid beer but even if you don't drink it you have to pay close attention to the label.  There are several very, very tiny messages located in various places around the label.  After drinking the beer and reading the label I had to Google the back story as well. There are always at least two sides to every story but I love when craft breweries make creative labels.  Here's a little sneak preview to peak your interest, "Do the crime, do the time, get the bragging rights. WHATEVER….WE'RE STILL HERE!!"
